Today’s renters have unique expectations for apartment websites (and, really, your marketing in general). Are you keeping up?

If you’re unsure or just looking for fresh guidance, this article is for you! We got two experts together — Izzy Carunungan and Nicole Landfried — to discuss top ways to transform your digital presence.

They shared four apartment website trends you should know about, paired with four visual media tips to try now.

Understanding renter expectations

The latest digital innovations, including social media platforms like TikTok, have changed what renters expect from apartment websites. They’re looking for unique, engaging experiences that quickly capture their attention.

Renters expect websites with:

  • Interactive features
  • Motion & animations
  • Rich, immersive media

Simply put, visual storytelling is taking charge. Renters want a website user experience (UX) that includes powerful visuals and doesn’t rely on text to tell your community’s story.

Keeping renter expectations in mind, let’s look at four design trends shaping successful websites. These apartment website trends are attracting renters, building trust and driving engaging experiences.

Trend #1: Vibrant colors

Have you heard the news? Color is back! Websites are becoming more expressive and distinctive using striking, high-impact colors.

Specifically, apartment websites are using vibrant color palettes, gradient layering (color stacked over images or typography), duotones (two contrasting colors) and reactive color schemes (colors that adapt to user behavior or system preferences). Incorporating color is a great way to show off your brand’s identity and draw attention to content.

Example website: Union 346

Also, we can’t skip mentioning Pantone’s color of the year: cloud dancer (a soft shade of white). Despite the vibrant-color trend, white space plays an important role on apartment websites. It guides attention and reduces visual clutter.

Trend #2: Neo-minimalism & micro-maximalism

You might be familiar with minimalism and maximalism, but what about neo-minimalism and micro-maximalism? Apartment websites are blending both to give renters a unique experience.

Think of neo-minimalism as bringing the human touch to minimalistic designs. Micro-maximalism leans into the “more is more” theme associated with maximalism, but it offers more repetition and balance.

These aesthetics mix:

  • Editorial layouts
  • Bold typeface
  • Color pops
  • Intricate details

The combination creates dimension and gives your website personality, without sacrificing usability.

Example website: The Sutton by Northland

Trend #3: Motion & animation

Next up is motion and animation, which help guide renters through your website.

Standout apartment websites are using scroll interactions, hover effects, micro-animations and seamless transitions. When used mindfully, these elements can lead renters to whatever you’d like, such as viewing a virtual tour.

That’s because motion and animation naturally direct attention. It delivers an intuitive, seamless experience and encourages renters to engage.

Example website: Vision at Knoxville

Trend #4: Emotion-led or humanized design

AI is everywhere, but it can make things feel too polished and leave people craving a more human experience. This is driving the final apartment website trend: leading with emotion and humanized design.

Websites are incorporating:

  • Hand-drawn illustrations
  • Candid, unfiltered photos
  • Conversational copy
  • Imperfect design details

These bring authenticity, personality and warmth. It makes your website look like there are real people behind it, which builds trust with renters and helps them envision life at your community.

Example website: Vision at Knoxville again (the hand-drawn illustrations are remarkable)

Your 4 visual media tips

You know what it takes to capture attention on apartment websites. The question is, once you have renters’ attention, what helps them make a decision?

That’s where visual media comes in. Rich media is your ticket to converting renters.

Keep reading to see four visual media tips to try now. Spoiler: Certain media formats drive the strongest results, butyou’ll need a multimedia, multichannel strategy to win today’s renters.

Tip #1: Prioritize virtual tours

If you’ve read our latest visual media articles, you know that renters expect virtual tours, and virtual tours drive leases.

A new RentCafe.com survey of over 11,000 renters from January-February 2026 confirms these expectations. Approximately 89% of renters find virtual tours helpful, and 1 in 3 renters skip apartment listings without a virtual tour.

And case study data tells us virtual tours drive 40% more leads and 72% more leases.

Make sure your media strategy includes virtual tours. They influence how renters evaluate your community, and they can make or break whether conversions happen.

Tip #2: Don’t skip unit-level tours

We know virtual tours matter, but do you need property tours, unit-level tours or both? We recommend both, but unit-level virtual tours are especially important.

That RentCafe.com survey found that 88% of renters want to see actual units. And 47% said unit-level virtual tours increase their confidence when leasing sight-unseen.

Back to the previously referenced case study, it shows that unit-level virtual tours have a 38% higher conversion rate.

Plain and simple, you need unit-level virtual tours. When renters can see exactly where they’ll live, confidence increases dramatically, and confidence drives conversions.

Tip #3: Have a multimedia, multichannel strategy

Rental search is changing. Renters are using AI to search for apartments, which means you’ll want to show up and stand out in AI search results. This calls for a multimedia, multichannel strategy that includes diverse media across your digital presence.

Like we’ve covered, virtual tours are important, but you’ll want other types of media too. And that media should live beyond your website.

Here’s why: Media sends positive signals to search and AI engines, which boosts your chances of appearing in AI search results. These engines also rely on content, consensus, reputation and social signals, so having media everywhere strengthens those signals.

As a baseline, your media strategy should include virtual tours, photos and short-form videos. You should also consider floor plans, 3D renderings, virtual staging and drone content to help your community stand apart.

And be sure to spread media across your website, ILS listings, social channels and Google Business Profile. A strong, unified digital presence improves search signals and increases your visibility online.

Tip #4: Make it easy

You’re ready to capture rich visual media, but how? The good news is you don’t need an enormous budget or fancy equipment.
